Atheists give many arguments, and despite being popular in some circles, many of them are not well thought out. For example, a famous argument is that you can’t see God, and therefore, he does not exist. If you follow this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion, it leads to a host of contradictions, for there are many things we cannot see that are true, nonetheless.
I once got into an argument with a girl in college. She taunted me: “Show me God. You can’t see God. Where is he?”
I replied that God is like the wind. You cannot see the wind, but you can feel it. You can experience it. She responded by telling me bring her a trash bag. Her argument was that if you hold the bag open, you will see the wind inflate that trash bag. Thus, you can see the wind exists.
“To the contrary,” I replied. “You cannot see the wind at all but merely the effects of the wind. The wind is invisible to the naked eye, similar to God.”
Think about the universe. Mankind cannot see the vast majority of everything in the universe. Moreover, most of the things we’ve discovered could not be seen until we discovered them. Just because we could not see them, does not mean that they did not, or do not, exist.
Even today, there are many things we believe but can’t see, things like; dark matter, dark energy, or black holes, for example. For most of history, scientists have taught that nobody could see inside a black hole. Why? Because the massive amounts of gravity pull the light in and nothing can escape its grasp. Without light, it is, in effect, invisible.
Scientists say the only way we “see” a black hole or to know of its existence is to observe their effects on light, matter and other objects. We can see the effects but not the inside of the hole itself.
We cannot see gravity, but I would not recommend testing our inability to see it by jumping off a building. There are many ways we can “see” things and detect them without actual sight.
So, the next time an atheist says, “Show me God,” you can reply, “Let me see gravity, dark matter, or the inside of a black hole. In regard to gravity, someone may advise you to go jump off a building. Again, this would only demonstrate the effects of gravity. It is and always will be invisible, like God. While we cannot see him, we may observe his effects on the world and the universe.
