After watching a marathon of Gossip Girl (to understand why it is so popular), I still have a lingering feeling of unholiness surrounding the teen drama series. A long purifying shower is in order to cleanse my mind, heart, and soul from the filth of this show. Why is this show popular? Are we, as humans, really so content to enter into a world of filth rather than one of beauty and love? What I really fear is that this show is a reflection of our culture and society today that has taken its morals to the gutter.
The characters all lead lives the way they are not meant to be lived; and we endorse, support, and even glorify humans at their worst. Does anyone reading this just love being lied to? How about being cheated on? Do we look forward to having people spread gossip and false rumors about us?
Don’t we strive to stay far away from these things, whether in family, friendships, or relationships? Then, why do we fill our minds and souls with it on TV? We all desire true love which is something to be emulated and value truth and wholesome relationships. Yet, Gossip Girl constantly lives the complete opposite in every episode.
Perhaps, for some, it’s a reflection of real life? Perhaps others like to watch people who are train wrecks because these people have worse problems than their own. Even if this is true, shouldn’t we be watching things that are good, true, and beautiful, or finding ways to make ourselves better, more virtuous people?
Observe the characters on the show. Everyone lies. Everyone gossips. People deceive and hurt others as often as they text. This even happens with people who “love” each other. Teenagers lie to adults, including their parents. They lie to each other, including their best friends. Adults are less than honest with each other much of the time, and sometimes even with their kids. What kind of an example does this send out to society?
It should be shocking and appalling, not enjoyable. The amount of cheating and adultery that occurs between boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives is abominable. Cheating in this show is more common than switching partners at a county line dance. This is not okay, and Christians should not be enjoying mortal sin for entertainment- not if we have put on the “Mind of Christ” as St. Paul says.
It seems that this show, and others like Game of Thrones, Sex in the City, Orange is the New Black and others, reflect a culture that doesn’t know what love is and doesn’t know God. It reveals a culture that has no standards of morality when it comes to relationships, or otherwise.
Also, what’s with falling head over heels for people who aren’t lovable and who are not even capable of loving you? The characters aren’t “love at first sight” worthy as they are not virtuous or godly in any way. The characters are mean, rude, uncaring, slanderous, vengeful, and can’t be trusted. Who would want to be with someone like that? What’s with characters sacrificing everything they have for a shallow, immature relationship that will destroy them? Why do they get back together with their ex-boyfriend/girlfriend after being cheated on again and again?
It’s like banging your head against several walls because you didn’t learn the first few times. Insanity is doing the same thing repetitively expecting a different result and Gossip Girl is vicious circle of immorality and insanity. Again, why are we filling out minds with such filth? What does that say about us and the state of our own souls? If you are what you eat, are shows like Gossip Girl and Sex in the City worthy of our consumption?
What will you watch the next time you decide to “Netflix & chill”?
